Student Employment

Student employment plays an important role at the University as many departments depend on student employees to assist in the day-to-day operations. An on-campus jobs is a means of gaining meaningful work experience as well as earning money to help defray educational and personal expenses.  Each year, over 800 students are employed by the University in a variety of functions including research, athletics, library, technology, administration, tutoring and more.

Here at the SEO, our goal is to facilitate on-campus employment from position creation to student placement.  We work with various departments to identify student job opportunities and provide easy access to those opportunities with our job posting board.  Once you have been offered a job, we facilitate the onboarding process so you can begin work as quickly as possible.

Eligibility

To be eligible for student employment, you must:

  • be a registered student at the University of New Haven
  • be in good academic standing
  • not have a hold on your account

Types of Employment

There are two main types of employment:

Federal Work Study (FWS)

The University receives funding from the government which the Office of Financial Aid awards to current or incoming students who are eligible.  Eligibility is based on the completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) which will determine a student’s financial need.  If awarded FWS, a student must accept the award through their financial aid portal.  Once the award is accepted by the student, they will have an opportunity to earn up to the awarded amount by obtaining an on-campus position.

NOTE: Only domestic students are eligible to be employed in FWS positions.

Non-Federal Work Study (NFWS)

These on-campus positions are not funded by the government (unless grant-funded); therefore, a department will use their student budget to employ a student.

NOTE: International and Domestic students are eligible to be employed in NFWS positions.

Interviewing

Before you are hired for a position, you may be contacted by the hiring supervisor to schedule an interview. Therefore, here are a few tips:

MAKE A GREAT IMPRESSION

  • Dress the part….. business casual is appropriate and the minimum for most positions but use your judgement and dress up if you feel it’s necessary. 
  • Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early before the scheduled interview time. 
  • Silence or turn off your cell phone and put away ear buds. 
  • Dispose of any food, drinks or gum. 
  • Introduce yourself. 
  • Be friendly and relaxed. 

COME PREPARED

  • Review the department website to understand its mission.
  • Bring a copy of your resume.
  • Review and practice how you would answer potential questions about your background, work experiences, education and career goals.
  • Be prepared to ask 2-3 questions about the position.

ADDITIONAL 

  • Know your availability. How many hours can you comfortably work and when are you available given your class schedule and other school activities.
  • Inquire about the next steps and the timing of the hiring decision.
  • Follow up with a thank-you email within 24 hours.

If you are offered the job, consider the following before you accept the position:

  • Are you clear on the position responsibilities and your ability to perform them?
  • Will you be able to work the scheduled hours and still have time to devote to your studies and activities? 

Hiring Process

Once you have accepted the job:

New Hire?

If you have never worked in a paid position on campus before, you will be contacted by the SEO to begin the onboarding process.  This will include:

  • Attending a New Hire Orientation. 
  • Completing Employment Forms (Federal W4, CT W4, and Direct Deposit).
  • Acknowledgement of the Condientiality Policy and Student Employment/Payroll guidelines. 
  • An in-person appointment to complete the I-9 form. 

Rehire?

if you have held a paid on-campus position, you will not be required to go through the onboarding process again.  Simply wait to receive an email from the SEO regarding your online time sheet being available for the position.

Whether you are a New Hire or Rehire, employment should not start until you have been approved the SEO.
