Writing Programs
Writing is a key method of communication for students of any discipline: engineers and scientists write lab reports, marketers and accountants write business proposals and memos, security officers write reports and legal documents. The University of New Haven has a number of programs to guide students along the path to becoming successful writers.
As part of the university’s core curriculum, students take The Seminar in Academic Inquiry and Writing in their first year at the university to learn the basics of academic writing, research, and argumentation. After taking this seminar, all students take a “W”-designated course. The “W” designation is attached to many core-curriculum and major courses, and these courses allow students to gain the techniques needed to write in a particular field of study. The University Writing Center guides students along the path to success by providing peer tutors to help with writing assignments from any course and the Johnson Family Writing Awards recognize strong student writers and professors for their achievements.
First Year Writing (FYW) – In the FYW Program, students from all majors learn to write deliberately, use research thoughtfully, and argue effectively.
Writing Across the Curriculum (W Courses) – W courses give students the opportunity to explore a specific subject while learning about the styles of writing utilized in that field.
University Writing Center – The University Writing Center offers students space to work with a peer tutor on writing assignments of all sizes, from all subjects.
Writing Proficiency Assessment (WPA) – Find out everything you need to know to submit your university-mandated writing sample before graduation.
