My Next Move

FOCUS Assessment

The first step in the career development process is self-assessment. In order to determine what major and career is right for you, a firm understanding of your skills, traits, values, and interests is required.

The FOCUS Career Assessment system can help! FOCUS is based on Holland Occupational Theory, which states that since jobs have skills and traits that define them, people with matching skills and traits will likely enjoy and thrive in that career.

You will be asked questions related to your skills (things you do well), your work and leisure interests (things you like to do), your personality type, and your work values (things you want from your career) and then FOCUS provides you majors and occupations that match your input.

FRAUDULENT JOB NOTICE

As an international student, it is important that you understand the type of employment you are eligible for and how to apply. Unauthorized employment (even for one day) will violate your legal U.S. visa status. It can also jeopardize your eligibility for future benefits, like change of status to a professional working visa like a H-1B, for example. To avoid any misunderstandings, consult the University Immigration Services (UIS) and be authorized before beginning to work. Please visit the website of University Immigration Services (UIS) for additional details.

  1. Activate your Handshake & Interstride accounts to browse jobs/internship
  2. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) – work authorization for an internship that MUST be connected directly to your course of study, be approved by faculty and University Immigration Services, to then be documented in the federal visa database. The focus of CPT is to gain hands on experience directly related to your academic studies. To be eligible you must be in your second semester and can only complete two semesters/terms. CPT can only be completed while you are an active student. CPT is part time (<20 hrs) during the academic year and can be full time (40 hrs) during summer months.
  3. Optional Practical Training (OPT) – OPT is work authorization provided for post-graduate full-time employment. International students receive between 1 year and 3 years (STEM) of OPT before requiring visa sponsorship. OPT must be documented with University Immigration Services and approved by the US government.
  4. On-Campus Employment – all on-campus job applications can be found on Handshake. An on-campus job is verified via Student Employment and paid directly by the University.
